THIS HNG DREAM OF MINE

It’s been a minute I must say. I have had to deal with a whole lot of things since the last time I wrote an article here. Yeah, I know I said I would consistently drop articles here, but you know how these things get! …..scratch that! That’s a lie, I just have not prioritized it yet, and that is most likely why I have been super lazy about it, or maybe that’s why it has not even crossed my mind in a while.

You know what they say about necessities yeah? I can say that in the last two weeks I have had to make very important decisions. So, I just graduated from the prestigious University of Benin, where I studied Petroleum Engineering. It was an eventful six years (plus the covid-19 year) of my life. During this time, I decided not to do petroleum engineering for a career when I graduate. I decided to venture into tech. In a bid to do that, I applied for the most anticipated tech internship in Africa, the HNG internship. This internship is a bundle of experiences, as it has produced a lot of the big guys we have in the Nigerian tech industry today. The internship just started, and the first task in stage one required me to write this article. I am thankful.

I am enrolled in the front-end track of this internship, and I must say, I am expectant. I know that the internship is going to be really intense, as it would require a lot of patience, speedy task completion, dealing with annoying people who I would find as teammates, willingness to learn a great deal, and learn on the go, determination, and courage to advance no matter the hurdles. I am prepared to face these, knowing that the worst thing that can happen is that I would fail, and having it at the back of my mind that failing is not final, it is just a new lesson learned.

Majorly, I hope to make it to the final stage (stage ten) of the internship, as it is going to be a really bumpy ride. I also hope to have a super robust portfolio at the end of this internship, one that wows employers and even me (its owner) every single time. I hope to also be able to make new connections and build long-lasting relationships that would advance my career. All in all, I hope to have a great time, create long-lasting memories, and really enjoy every bit of this internship. If time permits, I would occasionally give updates here about how the internship is going.

The HNG internship is coordinated by the Zuri team. You can learn more about them here: https://zuri.team. Just in case you wonder what part of tech one should venture into, I must say they are a whole lot, one of which is UI/UX design using Figma. You can check out a beginner’s tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cx2dkpBxst8&list=PLXDU_eVOJTx7QHLShNqIXL1Cgbxj7HlN4. You can also learn to program if you are not the design type of guy (lol like me). There are a ton of languages you can learn. One of such is python. If you want to get started in front-end web development like me, then you have to first learn HTML (HyperText Markup Language). Here is a link to a beginner-friendly tutorial on HTML: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU6anWqZJcc.

Another very important tool one needs to learn when getting into programming is git. Git is an open-source version control tool designed to handle everything from small to large projects with speed and efficiency. One very interesting tutorial you can take on git is found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JJ101D3knE.

In all, the most important thing in tech is to learn by doing. Build projects, and that’s how you get better. I will step on the brakes here, hoping to write another article soon.

Remember, my name is Success.
